Biography
Raleigh, NC indie rock quartet Ashley Stove originated in 1992 when guitarists and vocalists Matt Brown and Ben Barwick assembled the band. Following an initial stretch of fluctuating personnel, the group secured drummer Billy Alphin, also known for his work in Buttsteak, as a steady member later that same year, while bassist Jennifer Walker-Barwick, previously with Erectus Monotone, came aboard in 1993. After issuing multiple singles, the quartet put out its first full-length album, 4-Finger Moon, on Jesus Christ Records in 1995, with the follow-up Into the Sun appearing two years afterward. Ashley Stove then moved to Merge Records for the 1999 album New Scars and contributed to the label’s Oh Merge compilation. Brown departed in 2000 just prior to the tracking of the fourth album, All Summer Long, prompting the remaining members to bring in guitarist Mike Kenlan for the sessions and to add Jim Brantley as a full-time replacement ahead of the early-2001 release.
