Versus stood as a fixture in New York City's indie rock community across the 1990s, infusing noisy pop material with elaborate instrumental skill. Across four albums plus numerous singles, the group progressed from its early discordant phase toward refined composition, evident on the 2000 release Hurrah. Following a lengthy hiatus spanning roughly ten years, the outfit resurfaced with its fifth long-player, On the Ones and Threes, in 2010.

The project took shape from the dissolved remnants of Flower, the outfit fronted by singer and guitarist Richard Baluyut. During Flower's closing period, vocalist and guitarist Fontaine Toups joined the lineup and later continued alongside Baluyut in the brief Saturnine project; the pair then launched Versus—taking the moniker from a Mission of Burma album—with the addition of Baluyut's sibling Ed. Their initial performances featured a three-guitar configuration paired with a drum machine until Ed moved to the Philippines, prompting Toups to shift to bass. When Ed came back, he took over drumming, leading to the band's debut single "Insomnia" in 1992. The following year brought the taut and tuneful EP Let's Electrify!, which highlighted intricate guitar textures and unconventional vocal blends. After inking a deal with Teen Beat, Versus delivered its first full-length, The Stars Are Insane, in 1994—an effort originally slated under the title Meat, Sports and Rock, reflecting three topics the members enthusiastically endorsed despite resistance from prevailing indie attitudes at the time. A 1995 compilation titled Dead Leaves gathered stray singles, anthology contributions, and early recordings, while the EP Deep Red surfaced in early 1996. A third Baluyut brother, James, joined for that year's Secret Swingers LP, which also marked Ed's final recording with the group; Patrick Ramos stepped in on drums for the subsequent 1998 album Two Cents Plus Tax. Merge Records issued the Afterglow EP the next year, and 2000 saw both the Shangri-La EP and the band's fourth studio album, Hurrah. An extended pause occupied most of the 2000s until the members reconvened for On the Ones and Threes in 2010, restoring original drummer Ed Baluyut to the fold. Sporadic live appearances marked the reformed era, interspersed with occasional studio sessions for fresh material. New tracks emerged in 2019 via the four-song EP Ex Nihilo at the start of the year, followed by the full-length Ex Voto during the summer.
