Formed in Phoenix, Arizona, the Word Alive surfaced in 2008 as a metalcore outfit that fused conventional breakdowns with electronic dance elements before gradually incorporating melodic modern rock hooks and alternative metal textures. Their 2009 EP Empire registered on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, and the group later reinforced its standing within the scene through the full-length releases Life Cycles in 2012, Dark Matter in 2016, and Monomania in 2020.

Craig Mabbitt, along with guitarists Zack Hansen and Tony Pizzuti, launched the project while Mabbitt simultaneously joined Escape the Fate. Early on, bassist Nick Urlacher, drummer Tony Aguilera, and keyboardist Dusty Riach completed the lineup, yet Mabbitt’s demanding tour commitments prompted his departure in favor of vocalist Tyler Smith. With Smith fronting the band, the Word Alive secured a deal with Fearless Records, which issued the Empire EP in 2009. Following extensive touring, they delivered their debut album Deceiver in 2010, the same year Aguilera and Urlacher exited; Daniel Shapiro and Justin Salinas took their places, though Salinas departed two years later and Luke Holland assumed the drum seat.

Life Cycles, a darker and more aggressive follow-up, appeared in 2012. The group refined its approach further on the 2014 album Real, emphasizing atmospheric nuances within the genre. Throughout 2015 the band maintained a demanding itinerary that reached Hong Kong, Bangkok, and the Philippines. That November, vocalist Smith sustained a broken back and multiple fractured ribs after a stage dive yet completed every remaining concert. Dark Matter, the band’s fourth album, was announced shortly afterward and entered the Billboard Indie chart at number 2 upon its March 2016 release. Holland subsequently left, with Matt Horn filling the drum role, while Shapiro was later replaced by Ryan Daminson. The quintet issued the singles “Misery” and “Red Clouds” ahead of the 2018 album Violent Noise. For Monomania, the band enlisted producer Erik Ron, whose credits include Panic! At the Disco, Godsmack, and Blessthefall; the record arrived in February 2020.
