Biography
Like Moths to Flames established their own space within metalcore by merging intricate technical skill, relentless intensity, and strong melodic elements. Their first album, When We Don't Exist, appeared in 2011 and launched the path toward broader recognition. The group achieved wider notice through An Eye for an Eye in 2013 and The Dying Things We Live For in 2015, both of which registered on the Billboard 200 and reflected expanding reach. Although frequent personnel shifts occurred, vocalist Chris Roetter stayed the only unchanging member; even so, the band maintained momentum into the 2020s with the forceful and favorably received No Eternity in Gold in 2020 and The Cycles of Trying to Cope in 2024.
The band formed in 2010 and advanced steadily from the start. Singer Chris Roetter, previously of Agraceful and Emarosa, joined forces with bassist Aaron Evans of TerraFirma once their prior groups dissolved. They quickly added guitarists Zach Huston and Eli Ford plus drummer Lance Greenfield, and before the year ended the lineup had secured a deal with Rise Records while issuing the Sweet Talker EP. In 2011 the metalcore newcomers delivered their debut full-length, When We Don't Exist, on Rise, which entered the Billboard Heatseekers chart on the strength of its heavy, breakdown-driven approach. Recorded by Will Putney at The Machine Shop in Hoboken, New Jersey, An Eye for an Eye surfaced in 2013 and reached number 63 on the Billboard 200. Two years afterward The Dying Things We Live For also performed well on the charts. In September 2017 the band put out the single “Nowhere Left to Sink” before unveiling their fourth studio album, Dark Divine, the following month.
After leaving Rise Records in 2019, Like Moths to Flames released the EP Where the Light Refuses to Go, then followed with the full-length No Eternity in Gold the next year on the Australian independent label UNFD. In 2024 the group returned with The Cycles of Trying to Cope, a driving and emotionally intense semi-concept album divided into four parts: Limbo, Fracture, Dissociate, and Melancholia.
