Currents emerged from Connecticut in 2017 as a fiercely independent American metalcore outfit steeped in death metal textures. Their debut full-length, the ferociously djent-driven The Place I Feel Safest, announced an aggressive stance that carried over into the boundary-stretching progressive metalcore of The Way It Ends and The Death We Seek.

The band had actually started in 2011, spending several years developing its identity before locking in the lineup of Brian Wille on vocals, Jeff Brown behind the drums, Chris Wiseman and Ryan Castaldi on guitars, and Dee Cronkite on bass. Taking cues from Meshuggah, Architects, and Structures, the quintet released the independent EPs Victimized in 2013 and Life//Lost in 2015, then spent the next two years shaping what became their first album. The Place I Feel Safest surfaced in 2017 via SharpTone Records, followed a year later by the EP I Let the Devil In.

Early 2020 brought a string of singles, among them the punishing “Poverty of Self,” which preceded the June arrival of the sophomore album The Way It Ends. That record featured the revised roster of Wille, Wiseman, Castaldi, Chris Pulgarin on bass, and Matt Young on drums; an instrumental edition appeared the next year. The potent, hard-hitting “Remember Me,” issued in 2023 and focused on the strains social media places on personal bonds, led the way for the group’s third album, The Death We Seek.
