Volumes

Volumes, an American metalcore outfit based in Los Angeles, California, ranked among the first acts to shape the groove-heavy, palm-muted djent style. The unit surfaced in 2010 and delivered its debut full-length, Via, the next year. That album, along with the later No Sleep in 2014 and Different Animals in 2017, earned strong approval from metal listeners around the world. Despite repeated membership shifts across their career, with bassist Raad Soudani as the lone unchanging participant, Volumes sustained their core sound of severe breakdowns, taut melodic riffing, and nu-metal touches.

Guitarist-songwriters Diego Farias and Daniel Braunstein launched the project in 2009. It later became a six-piece through the inclusion of co-lead vocalists Michael Barr and Gus Farias (Diego’s brother), bassist Raad Soudani, and drummer Chris Khoury. Braunstein exited before the 2010 debut EP The Concept of Dreaming appeared, at which point Daniel Schwartz joined. In 2011 the band toured North America with Arsonists Get All the Girls, the Contortionist, and Structures; the run ended with the Mediaskare Records release of Via. Also that year Khoury and Schwartz left, and drummer Nick Ursich came aboard soon after. The second album, No Sleep, surfaced in 2014 and was promoted via the group’s first complete U.S. Vans Warped Tour. Michael Barr departed in 2015 and was succeeded by Myke Terry, formerly of Bury Your Dead, who appeared on the well-regarded 2017 Fearless Records album Different Animals. The 2019 Coming Clean EP brought Michael Barr back while also marking the exits of Gus Farias and co-founder Diego Farias, the latter of whom died at age twenty-seven one week after his departure.
