Biography
Silent Planet, a metalcore outfit rooted in Los Angeles, crafts songs that shift between hushed atmospheric passages and aggressive sonic barrages while examining the difficulties of existence amid upheaval and disorder. Although frontman Garrett Russell holds Christian beliefs, he has consistently declined to label the band a Christian act, emphasizing instead that the lyrics explore varied themes and prioritize inquiry over straightforward resolutions. The group launched its career with the intense 2014 release The Night God Slept before incorporating more intricate arrangements and electronic textures on the 2018 album When the End Began and the 2023 effort Superbloom.
Drawing its name from a C.S. Lewis novel, Silent Planet originated in 2009 when Garrett Russell, motivated by his experiences volunteering at a Haitian orphanage during a Christian youth mission, chose to channel his spiritual convictions through music. Russell handled lead vocals alongside Thomas Freckleton on guitar, keyboards, and vocals, guitarist Spencer Keene, bassist Igor Efimov, and drummer Alex Camarena as the band began performing at West Coast clubs. Keene occasionally skipped tours, with Mitchell Stark frequently substituting on guitar. Their first EP, Come Wind, Come Weather, appeared in 2012 under the production of Matt Goldman. A second EP, Lastsleep (1944-1946), followed in 2014 and drew strong critical praise, leading Solid State Records to sign the group and issue its debut full-length, The Night God Slept, that November. Efimov exited in 2015, prompting Freckleton to assume bass duties in addition to his existing roles. The 2016 sophomore album Everything Was Sound marked the final recording for Keene, who departed shortly afterward; touring guitarist Mitchell Stark then joined as a permanent member.
For the third album the band recruited veteran metalcore producer Will Putney, resulting in 2018’s When the End Began, which preserved the intensity of their live performances while exploring ambient and experimental directions. When the COVID-19 pandemic halted touring in 2020, Silent Planet focused on studio work, issuing The Night God Slept Redux with newly recorded versions of the debut album’s tracks along with an instrumental edition and instrumental mixes of Everything Was Sound and When the End Began. The following year they collaborated on two songs with Fit For A King, contributing vocals from Ryan Kirby to “Trilogy” and receiving Garrett Russell’s vocals on “Stockholm.” Later in 2021 the group delivered its fourth studio album, Iridescent, and supported the release with a tour alongside Motionless In White, Light the Torch, and Dying Wish. Superbloom, the fifth studio album, arrived in 2023 and introduced a revised lineup after Thomas Freckleton stepped away for health reasons and to prioritize family time; Nick Pocock, who had toured with the band in 2022, became the official bassist. In December 2024 Silent Planet independently released the single “Mindframe” through Many Hats distribution following the end of its association with Solid State.
