Taking its moniker from Marilyn Monroe's birth name, the metalcore outfit Norma Jean originated in Georgia during the 2000s once the earlier band Luti-Kriss had disbanded. Initially pursuing a rap-metal style that served as a Christian-inflected counterpart to nu-metal acts such as Korn, the group later abandoned that direction for a rawer, more aggressive approach built around savage screams and relentless instrumentation. This shift helped the Southern ensemble cultivate a devoted following within the alt-metal scene, drawing both Christian and secular listeners through the 2002 debut Bless the Martyr & Kiss the Child and the 2008 chart high point The Anti-Mother. Despite repeated membership turnover across the years that left none of the founding musicians, Norma Jean sustained its momentum with later releases including the 2013 album Wrongdoers and 2022's Deathrattle Sing for Me.

The band came together in 1997 in Douglasville, an Atlanta suburb, with Josh Scogin, Scottie Henry, Chris Day, Josh Swofford, Daniel Davison, and Mick Bailey among its initial members. Once the ensemble locked into its hardcore direction, the roster had changed to keep Henry, Day, and Davison while adding vocalist Cory Brandan in place of interim singer Brad Norris. During the early 2000s the prior configuration issued two projects under the Luti-Kriss name, beginning with the 5 EP and continuing with the 2001 full-length Throwing Myself on Solid State, a Seattle imprint affiliated with Tooth & Nail. Because the Luti-Kriss name was frequently confused with that of Atlanta rapper Ludacris, the musicians adopted the Norma Jean designation. This new identity debuted on the 2002 album Bless the Martyr & Kiss the Child, which also stood as the group's most intense recording to that point. Whereas the earliest Luti-Kriss material drew parallels to Limp Bizkit and Korn, Bless the Martyr & Kiss the Child invited comparisons to Hatebreed instead. Producer Matt Bayles, known for work with Isis and Mastodon, contributed to 2005's O God, The Aftermath, and Ross Robinson produced the ambitious 2006 release Redeemer. In early 2008 drummer Chris Raines, formerly of Spitfire, joined the lineup that then issued The Anti-Mother that summer.

Norma Jean moved to Razor & Tie for the 2010 album Meridional. Although that record marked a creative peak, the subsequent studio sessions proved turbulent as bassist Jake Schultz, guitarist Scottie Henry, and drummer Chris Raines departed during the two-year process. The remaining members continued by bringing in guitarist Jeff Hickey, drummer Clayton Holyoak, and bassist John Finnegan. Their efforts yielded the focused and powerful Wrongdoers in 2013. Returning to Solid State, the band issued the 2016 singles "1,000,000 Watts" and "Synthetic Sun" before delivering the seventh studio album Polar Similar that August. Additional changes followed with the exits of Day, Holyoak, and Finnegan, and later Jeff Hickey as well. Proceeding with Brandan and guitarist/vocalist Philip Farris, the group recorded the eighth album All Hail, which appeared in 2019 and reached number three on the Billboard hard rock charts. The 2022 release Deathrattle Sing for Me further demonstrated Norma Jean's development through a progressive-leaning collection of intense metalcore expression.
