Biography
Stray from the Path operate out of Long Island, New York, forging erratic and volatile hardcore and metalcore that pairs raw honesty with pointed critiques of policing and wider social inequities. Their recording bow arrived via Audio Prozac in 2003, after which sustained touring and further releases led to a Sumerian Records alliance that yielded Villains in 2008. Fifth album Rising Sun cracked the U.S. Heatseekers Top 20 in 2011, while 2013 successor Anonymous climbed inside the Top 40. The band sustained its output through the decade’s close via Subliminal Criminals in 2015 and Internal Atomics in 2019 before delivering tenth LP Euthanasia in 2022.
Thomas Williams, John Kane, Justin Manas, Ed Edge, and Frank Correira assembled the group in 2001. Following the self-released 2002 demo People Over Profit, the original members issued Audio Prozac on Pride Recordz in 2003. Five Point Records next put out Our Oceania in 2005, prompting vocalist Edge’s departure and his replacement by Andrew Dijorio, who records as Drew York. Continued cross-country touring preceded the 2007 Five Point split How to Make a Ucalegon with Lilu Dallas.
Sumerian Records released the Kurt Ballou-produced Villains in 2008, after which Ryan Thompson supplanted Correira on bass, Manas shifted from drums to guitar in Kane’s stead, and Dan Bourke (ex-This Is Hell) took over behind the kit. This lineup tracked Make Your Own History with Misha “Bulb” Mansoor, releasing it in 2009. Thompson exited in 2010; bassist/vocalist Anthony Altamura filled the vacancy. Extensive North American and European touring preceded the Will Putney-produced fifth album Rising Sun, which appeared in 2011 and featured guests tied to Comeback Kid, the Ghost Inside, and Norma Jean. Putney also helmed sixth effort Anonymous, issued in 2013 with contributions from letlive. and Stick to Your Guns affiliates; the set reached the upper half of the Billboard Top 200. Subliminal Criminals, the seventh full-length, followed in 2015.
July 2017 brought the contentious single “Goodnight Alt-Right,” previewing eighth album Only Death Is Real, which arrived that September and marked drummer Craig Reynolds’ studio debut. The band signed with UNFD Records in 2019, issuing live set Smash ’Em Up: Live in Europe 2019 in August and studio album Internal Atomics months later; the latter included Brendan Murphy of Counterparts on “Kickback” and Matt Honeycutt of Kublai Khan TX on “Double Down.” Live EPs such as Internal Atomics: Live in London carried the group into the 2020s. In 2022 they joined Underoath and Spiritbox for an extended tour ahead of tenth album Euthanasia.
