Thy Art Is Murder arose from Blacktown as a ferocious Australian deathcore ensemble, renowned for its brutal breakdowns alongside punishing, technically intricate surges of djent-driven guitar aggression. Their 2012 album Hate established them as the first extreme metal act to crack the ARIA charts' Top 40. Follow-up releases Holy War in 2015 and Dear Desolation two years later gained traction overseas, appearing on charts in both Canada and the United States. The group further sharpened its ferocious, blackened death metal identity on the 2023 album Godlike.

The band formed in 2006 with its original roster of vocalist Brendan Van Ryn, guitarists Gary Markowski and Sean Delander, bassist Josh King, and drummer Lee Stanton. They delivered their debut EP Infinite Death in 2008, which reached the Top Ten on the Australian independent charts. Van Ryn exited soon afterward owing to creative differences and was succeeded by Chris "CJ" McMahon, formerly of the Sydney metalcore band Vegas in Ruins.

After multiple lineup adjustments, the group entered the studio to record its first full-length album, The Adversary, released in 2010 on Skull & Bones. In 2012 they issued their second studio LP Hate through the Australian independent label Halfcut, which led to a deal with Nuclear Blast for a reissue the following year. That record charted in the U.S. and Australia and earned largely positive notices, as did their third studio effort, the Will Putney-produced Holy War from 2015. The Depression Sessions, a vinyl-only split with Fit for an Autopsy and the Acacia Strain, preceded their fourth full-length, the acclaimed Dear Desolation in 2017, which charted in eight countries. Upon the departure of founding drummer Lee Stanton, the band elevated his fill-in Jesse Beahler to permanent status, who first appeared in that role on the punishing 2019 album Human Target.

Released independently on the band's own Human Warfare label, Godlike from 2023 delivered an explosive collection of tracks exploring carnage and discord amid a post-modern dystopia.
