Within the Ruins emerged as a fiercely technical and unyielding deathcore outfit from the United States, achieving their initial Billboard 200 breakthrough in 2013 via the third full-length Elite. Subsequent releases such as the 2017 effort Halfway Human and Black Heart three years later sustained their reputation for dynamic, punishing material positioned at the intersection of death metal and post-hardcore. Drummer Kevin McGuill and guitarist Joe Cocchi launched the project in Westfield, Massachusetts during 2003 while still attending high school, and although numerous personnel shifts have occurred over the years—with only those two founders remaining constant—the group stabilized around bassist Andrew Tate and vocalist Tim Goergen.

Their sound fuses metalcore ferocity with intricate, heavily detuned guitar work, leading Victory Records to sign them and issue the debut Creature in 2009, followed the next year by Invade. A move to eOne brought Elite in 2013, marking their first entry on the primary album charts, after which Phenomena appeared on the same imprint in 2014. Bassist Paolo Galang took over for Tate in 2015, and the addition of clean vocals accompanied the fifth album, Halfway Human, in early 2017. The band continued exploring progressive territory with the 2020 release Black Heart.
