Originally called Black December, the symphonic deathcore group Winds of Plague came together in Upland, California, during 2002. After numerous personnel shifts, the lineup stabilized around vocalist Jonathan “Johnny Plague” Cooke, guitarists Nick Eash and Nick Piunno, keyboardist Kristen Randall, bassist Andrew Glover, and drummer Jeff Tenney. Roughly three years passed before the group adopted its present name, and the newly christened band issued its first album, A Cold Day in Hell, via Recourse Records in 2005. Century Media soon added Winds of Plague to its roster, resulting in the February 2008 release of Decimate the Weak. Keyboard duties changed for 2009’s The Great Stone War when Kristen Randall exited and Alana Potocnik joined. Against the World arrived in 2011 as the ensemble’s strongest commercial showing to date, highlighted by contributions from musicians associated with Hatebreed, Terror, For Today, Stray from the Path, and retired professional wrestler the Ultimate Warrior. Will Putney produced the band’s fifth full-length, Resistance, which surfaced in 2013, while Blood of My Enemy followed in 2017.
