Biography
Boston-based death metal/grindcore outfit the Red Chord fuse a crushing rhythmic assault and guitar patterns that bite like a circular saw with the menacing but intelligent lyrics and furious vocals of frontman Guy Kozowyk. The group formed in 1999 and quickly earned a reputation on the New England metal scene for their uncompromising sound and style, which led to a one-off album deal with the independent label Robotic Activities. Their 2002 release Fused Together in Revolving Doors was tracked in just three days, yet the results proved powerful enough to attract many new fans, allowing the band extra time to craft their follow-up, 2005’s Clients. That album functioned as a concept record drawn from Kozowyk’s day job at a pharmacy, where disturbed and eccentric individuals regularly appeared to refill prescriptions, with each track recounting the tale of a different “client.” Originally issued on Black Markey Activities—the respected metal label operated by Kozowyk and former bassist Adam Wentworth—Clients was later reissued by Metal Blade Records, which signed the band to a deal and took on distribution for several Black Markey Activities titles. The Red Chord shared stages with High on Fire, Hatebreed, GWAR, Between the Buried and Me, and Every Time I Die, and appeared on the 2006 Ozzfest bill. Prior to entering the studio for a third album, guitarist Johnny Fay departed to focus on his growing career as a recording engineer. With the revised lineup of Kozowyk on vocals, Mike “Gunface” McKenzie and Mike Keller on guitars, Greg Weeks on bass, and Brad Fickeisen on drums, the Red Chord embarked on tour ahead of the July 24, 2007 release of Prey for Eyes.
