Biography
The death metal outfit Through the Eyes of the Dead first unleashed its brutally heavy sound in June 2003, when the founding lineup of Anthony Gunnels on vocals, Justin Longshore and Richard Turbeville on guitars, Jeff Springs on bass, and Dayton Cantley on drums came together. Operating out of Florence, South Carolina, the musicians cited At the Gates, Morbid Angel, and Cannibal Corpse among their key influences, a debt audible on the five-song debut EP The Scars of Ages, which they recorded with Jamie King of Between the Buried and Me. The group secured a deal with LoveLost Records by fall 2003, and the label issued the EP the following January, quickly stirring interest across the metal underground. Turbeville soon left, and guitarist Chris Anderson joined within months, learning the material fast enough to join labelmates One Dead Three Wounded on the road.
Early summer 2005 brought a contract with Prosthetic, though Springs and Cantley exited shortly afterward; drummer Josh Kulick and bassist Jake Ososkie, formerly of Arsis, filled the vacancies. A split album with The Knife Trade surfaced that July, followed in October by the band’s first full-length, Bloodlust. TTEOTD remained on tour throughout the next year, including a summer 2006 run on the Sounds of the Underground package alongside In Flames and Trivium. Gunnels departed in early 2007 and was replaced by Nate Johnson, ex-Premonitions of War, who made his recording debut on that year’s Malice. Johnson exited soon after the album’s release and Danny Rodriguez took over vocals for the hard-hitting 2010 release Skepsis. In August 2017 the band issued the single “Hate the Living” ahead of its fourth studio album, Disomus, which arrived that October.
