Fit for an Autopsy sets itself apart in death metal by aligning its sonic ferocity with a deep-seated disdain for societal norms. The group delivers savage deathcore that fuses misanthropic lyrics with unrelenting auditory devastation, striking at both the ears and the convictions of its audience. The outfit surfaced in the early 2010s and reached a creative peak in 2015 through its widely praised third album, Absolute Hope Absolute Hell, before extending the limits of the style across later releases including The Great Collapse in 2017, The Sea of Tragic Beasts in 2019, Oh What the Future Holds in 2022, and The Nothing That Is in 2024.

Comprising vocalist Nate Johnson, formerly of Through the Eyes of the Dead, guitarist and producer Will Putney, known for his work with Like Moths to Flames and Misery Signals, guitarist Patrick Sheridan, bassist Shane Slade, and drummer Josean Orta, the band first drew attention in 2009 via the EP Hell on Earth. That recording caught the ear of Red Chord vocalist Guy Kozowyk, who placed the group on his Black Market Activities roster. In 2011 Fit for an Autopsy issued its debut full-length, The Process of Human Extermination, a record of uncompromising brutality. The equally severe follow-up, Hellbound, appeared in 2013 and marked the final appearance of Johnson, who departed the lineup on amicable terms the next year.

The third studio album, Absolute Hope Absolute Hell, emerged in 2015 and introduced vocalist Joe Badolato. It became the band’s strongest commercial showing yet, reaching the Top 20 on the Hard Rock Albums chart while climbing to number three on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. The 2017 release The Great Collapse maintained that momentum, channeling extensive socio-political anger and featuring cover artwork by Portland, Oregon-based artist Adam Burke.

With The Sea of Tragic Beasts in 2019 the group broadened its palette, incorporating melodic and progressive death-metal touches into an already punishing and varied sound. The explosive single “Far from Heaven” preceded the sixth album, Oh What the Future Holds, which arrived in early 2022 and attained number 23 on the Billboard 200 alongside a third-place finish on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart. The Aggression Sessions, a split EP shared with Thy Art Is Murder and Malevolence, surfaced in 2023, and the following year brought the full-length The Nothing That Is, which entered the Top 20 of the U.K. metal charts.
