Humanity's Last Breath, a Swedish death metal outfit, takes pride in crafting extreme death metal while incorporating technical aspects without hesitation. Buster Odeholm, serving as guitarist, producer, songwriter, and engineer, established the group in 2009 alongside vocalist Filip Danielsson, guitarist Johan Aldgård, and drummer Marcus Rosell. The band's debut full-length, Structures Collapse from 2011, preceded a lineup shift that saw Johan Aldgård depart in favor of Calle Thomer, a guitarist, producer, and engineer, who joined for the self-titled follow-up and has since solidified his position as a foundational member.

Having issued a pair of albums via Rogue Records, the collective opted to independently put out the Detestor EP during 2016, which signaled a shift toward greater technicality within the metal spectrum. Abyssal arrived as their third studio effort in 2019, marking their inaugural release on Unique Leader Records and featuring an accompanying disc of instrumental renditions drawn from the primary tracklist.

Emerging from the pandemic period, Humanity's Last Breath delivered Välde in 2021, supporting the effort through performances across Europe and North America. Odeholm and Thomer revisited the studio later and refined their approach to production. Previous works had achieved equilibrium among ambient qualities, atmospheric textures, and raw underground brutality, yet Ashen in 2023 leaned further into expansive sonic landscapes while embracing compositions at reduced tempos.
