Biography
Nile arose in the mid-'90s by fusing the blistering velocity and bleak outlook of technical death metal with the mystical atmospheres and archaic melodies drawn from Middle Eastern traditions, forging an immediately recognizable style that distinguished the group from its peers in heavy metal. The band’s self-described “Ithyphallic Metal” took shape beginning with the 1998 release Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka and continued through subsequent albums such as Those Whom the Gods Detest (2009), At the Gates of Sethu (2012), and Vile Nilotic Rites (2019), each drawing thematic material from Egyptian antiquity, the fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, and related sources.
The group formed in Greenville, South Carolina in 1993 with Karl Sanders handling guitar and vocals, Chief Spires on bass and vocals, and Pete Hammoura on drums. An EP titled Festivals of Atonement appeared in 1995 and earned the trio a prominent southwestern tour alongside Obituary, Deicide, and Broken Hope. Viscera Productions issued a second EP, Ramses Bringer of War, in 1997; the following year Relapse Records put out the band’s debut full-length, Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka. After Viscera ceased operations soon after releasing Ramses Bringer of War, the move to Relapse provided broader distribution and enabled performances with more established acts including Morbid Angel and Incantation.
Black Seeds of Vengeance, issued in 2000, presented Nile’s most intricate musical and lyrical constructions to that point; vocalist and guitarist Dallas Toler-Wade joined the lineup while session drummer Derek Roddy substituted for Pete Hammoura, who had sustained a hand injury on tour. Later that year the band released In the Beginning, a set of remastered and previously scarce recordings. The 2002 album In Their Darkened Shrines generated unprecedented mainstream attention for the group; its dark, cinematic character incorporated imagery from H.P. Lovecraft’s short story The Nameless City and marked the first studio appearance of drummer Tony Laureano.
Annihilation of the Wicked arrived in 2005 as Nile’s initial effort with permanent drummer George Kollias and its final release on Relapse. Following a shift to Nuclear Blast, the band issued Ithyphallic in 2007 and subsequently joined the Ozzfest tour while also performing in South Africa and Europe. In 2009 the musicians returned to the studio with producer Neil Kernon (Queensrÿche) to record their sixth studio album, Those Whom the Gods Detest. At the Gates of Sethu appeared in 2012 and became the group’s highest-charting release, while 2015’s What Should Not Be Unearthed received praise in both domestic and international markets. Shortly after that album’s release guitarist Toler-Wade departed and was succeeded by Brian Kingsland; together with new bassist Brad Parris, Kingsland made his studio debut on the ninth full-length, Vile Nilotic Rites, issued in 2019.
