Biography
Emerging from Providence, Rhode Island in 1989, death metal act Vital Remains took cues from Venom, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, Sodom, and Destruction. The founding lineup brought together guitarists Paul Flynn and Tony Lazaro, vocalist Jeff Gruslin, bassist Tom Supkow, and drummer Chris Dupont. Despite repeated roster adjustments and label transitions across the decades, the group sustained a consistent schedule of album releases. Early demo tapes—Reduced to Ashes in 1989 and Excruciating Pain in 1990—landed them a deal with France’s Thrash Records, which put out The Black Mass in 1991. Two further albums followed on Peaceville, Let Us Pray in 1992 and Into Cold Darkness in 1995, before the band shifted to Osmose for Forever Underground in 1997 and Dawn of the Apocalypse in 1999, the latter of which they view as their heaviest album to date.
