One of technical death metal's most vital and enduring acts, Poland's Decapitated originated in the late '90s when guitarist Wacław "Vogg" Kiełtyka joined forces with his younger brother, drummer Witold "Vitek" Kiełtyka. The band's debut album, Winds of Creation, arrived in 2000 while all members were still teenagers, and the follow-up releases Nihility (2002) and The Negation (2004) quickly expanded their global audience. After an automobile crash ended Vitek's life in 2007, the group dissolved, only to resume activity two years later. From that point forward, Decapitated has stayed at the forefront of extreme metal, delivering well-received albums such as Blood Mantra (2014) and Cancer Culture (2022) that combine technical precision with raw intensity.

Decapitated first assembled in 1996 when the collective ages of vocalist Sauron, guitarist Vogg, bassist Martin, and drummer Vitek averaged just 14 years old, earning swift notice as one of Poland's and Europe's premier practitioners of ultra-technical death metal. The group refined its approach across the demos Cemeterial Gardens (1997) and The Eye of Horus (1998), then secured a deal with Earache's Wicked World subsidiary that yielded Winds of Creation in 2000 and prompted a U.K. tour alongside grindcore act Lock Up. The following year brought The First Damned, an official presentation of the earlier demo material, while Nihility (2002) and The Negation (2004) further elevated the band's standing abroad. Beginning in 1999, Vogg and Martin also participated in the Polish black metal outfit Lux Occulta. Sauron exited in 2005; his replacement, Covan (Adrian Kowanek), debuted on Organic Hallucinosis, the first Decapitated album issued directly by Earache in 2006.

Multiple personnel shifts preceded the 2007 tragedy in which the tour bus crashed en route to Belarus, killing Vitek and severely injuring Covan and prompting an immediate pause. Vogg revived the project in 2009 by recruiting Austrian drummer Kerim "Krimh" Lechner from Thorns of Ivy, vocalist Rafał Piotrowski of Ketha, and bassist Filip "Heinrich" Hałucha of Vesania. The reconstituted lineup debuted on Carnival Is Forever, released by Nuclear Blast in 2011 and peaking at number 11 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. Blood Mantra followed in 2014, again charting high on Heatseekers, with Michał Łysejko and Paweł Pasek replacing Lechner and Hałucha; Anticult arrived in 2017, introducing groove-metal touches to the band's punishing style. Cancer Culture emerged in 2022, restoring bassist Paweł Pasek and featuring contributions from members of Jinjer and Machine Head.
