Soreption emerged in 2005 as a Swedish technical death metal band launched by drummer Tony Westermark and guitarist Anton Svedin, both of whom had previously performed in assorted death metal cover groups. They quickly recruited bassist Rickard Persson and vocalist Fredrik Söderberg, whose throat-scraping delivery completed the lineup. From the start the four musicians pursued ambitious aims, with the three seasoned instrumentalists demonstrating strong collaborative chemistry and sophisticated songwriting.

Their debut recording, the independently issued EP Illuminate the Excessive, was tracked in 2007 under the guidance of producers Chris and Tommy Rehn of Angtoria. The material drew equally from Necrophagist, Meshuggah, and Decapitated, blending polyrhythmic, schizophrenic time signatures, dense angular riffs, and swinging grooves into a sound that felt simultaneously raw, rapid, and machine-like. Underground metal outlets responded with unanimous acclaim, securing the group a deal with VSP Management. After several years of regional performances across Sweden and neighboring territories, the quartet returned to the studio and issued its first full-length album, Deterioration of Minds, in 2010 via Ninetone. Critics hailed the record’s elevated sophistication, positioning Soreption as a thoroughly modern act that drew minimal inspiration from earlier eras.

Extensive touring followed throughout Europe, the United States, and South America, during which the members continued writing new material. The resulting sophomore effort, Engineering the Void, appeared on Unique Leader Records in a session once again helmed by the Rehn brothers; the album’s sub-35-minute runtime and unrelenting heaviness drew consistent praise, with several reviewers reporting exhaustion after a single play-through. Its lead single and lyric video, “Breaking the Great Narcissist,” stood out for the way every riff veered through metric modulation. The release elevated the band to higher-profile festival slots and expanded touring routes until Persson stepped away from the road, with Mikael Almgren of Terminal Function taking over bass duties. In 2016 founding guitarist Svedin also departed; Almgren shifted to guitar while six-string bassist Kim Lantto, previously of Facial Abuse and Festering Remains, joined in time to record the third album, Monument of the End, for Sumerian Records. The sessions unfolded amid setbacks after a planned North American tour and multiple summer festival appearances were canceled over visa complications. Issued in August 2018, the record climbed the metal and streaming charts, prompting the band to reschedule its global itinerary.
