Biography
Hailing from Long Island, New York, Artificial Brain function as a five-piece technical death metal unit. Their foundational approach fuses punishing tech and death metal textures with the abrasive, high-frequency contours and Phrygian scales drawn from black metal, adding sharp dissonant angles alongside understated growling vocals whose lyrics draw from science fiction. The independently issued three-track Demo 2011 opened avenues for local live work, while the Butchering Cosmic Giants EP of 2013 attracted worldwide attention and secured a deal with Profound Lore. Colin Marston produced, mixed, and mastered the group’s first full-length album, Labyrinth Constellation, issued in 2014; the record received dozens of favorable notices for its forward-thinking update of death metal. Infrared Horizon, released in 2017, ventured further into experimental and expansive territory, earning the band a prominent support slot on Cattle Decapitation’s tour. Founding vocalist Will Smith exited in September 2021. Paulo Paguntalan assumed vocal duties for subsequent live commitments, although Smith’s performances had already been captured for tracks on the 2022 album Artificial Brain.
