Mitochondrion arose in 2003 as an innovative and uncompromising Canadian blackened death metal group from Victoria, British Columbia, recognized for dense, intricate songcraft and an unwavering commitment to brutality. The founding members included Shawn Haché on guitar and vocals, Nick Yanchuk likewise handling guitar and vocals, Mitch Aramenko on guitar, Nick Gibas on bass, and Jesse Anderson on drums. A self-titled demo surfaced in 2005, followed the next year by Through Cosmic Gaze. Jesse Anderson departed shortly afterward, with Karl Godard stepping in on drums.

The band issued its debut full-length Archaeaeon in 2008, earning critical acclaim throughout the extreme metal underground. Profound Lore took notice and signed the group. Mitch Aramenko and Nick Gibas then left, leaving Mitochondrion as a power trio. Parasignosis arrived in 2011 as the label debut and drew praise for its labyrinthian arrangements and impenetrable heaviness. Sebastian Montesi joined as bassist and vocalist the following year, making his studio debut on the 2013 EP Antinumerology. In Cronian Hour, a split with labelmates Auroch, appeared in 2016, after which the band entered a lengthy hiatus. Mitochondrion resurfaced in 2024 with Vitriseptome, an ambitious 86-minute collection of chaotic and relentlessly intense avant-garde metal that left no extreme sonic touchstone unturned.
