Biography
Trumpeter Ian Carr launched Nucleus in 1969 as the starting point for an extended jazz-rock exploration. A strong showing at the 1970 Montreux International Festival drew listeners and helped secure critical attention for the albums Elastic Rock and We'll Talk About It Later. Saxophonist Karl Jenkins, drummer John Marshall, and guitarist Chris Spedding completed the lineup at that stage. Spedding exited once the first two albums were finished, yet Jenkins and Marshall stayed until 1972, when both joined Soft Machine. Belladonna became the initial release issued under Carr alone, and although guitarist Allan Holdsworth contributed, the band gradually turned into a platform devoted to Carr's own projects. The group dissolved in the mid-'80s once several further albums had appeared under Carr's name only.
