Biography
Brand X originated in Britain as a jazz-rock fusion ensemble founded by Phil Collins, the drummer from Genesis, alongside guitarist John Goodsall from Atomic Rooster; the pair launched the project parallel to their primary band commitments. The first roster also featured keyboardist Robin Lumley together with bassist Percy Jones, previously of the Liverpool Scene and the Scaffold. Their opening release, the 1976 studio album Unorthodox Behaviour, was succeeded the next year by the concert recording Livestock and the studio set Moroccan Roll. After Collins departed to focus exclusively on Genesis, the 1978 album Masques introduced drummer Chuck Burgi, known for his work with Al Di Meola, plus extra keyboardist Peter Robinson, an alumnus of Stanley Clarke’s band. The group continued with three more studio albums—Product in 1979, Do They Hurt? in 1980, and Is There Anything About? in 1982—before dissolving. In the mid-1990s Lumley, Goodsall, and Jones reconvened and subsequently put out multiple live collections. Guitarist John Goodsall passed away on November 11, 2021, aged 68. Keyboardist Robin Lumley died of heart failure on March 9, 2023, at the age of 74.
