Biography
Beyond Creation formed as a progressive technical death metal quartet in Montreal. What sets the group apart from others operating in that crowded style is an emphasis on melodic songwriting, persistent rhythmic grooves, and riffs that feel instantly graspable, their technical command registering as incidental rather than intentional and thereby heightening the overall appeal. Their lyrics and thematic concerns tend toward dense intellectual territory, exploring subjects that include science, spirituality, politics, corruption, government conspiracies, and extraterrestrials.
Guitarist and lead vocalist Simon Girard joined forces with former guitarist Nicolas Domingo Viotto in 2005 to begin composing material, though original drummer Guyot Begin-Benoit did not join until 2008. Following a period of rehearsals and further songwriting, Begin-Benoit departed and was succeeded by guitarist and backing vocalist Kevin Chartré. Bassist Dominic “Forest” Lapointe entered the lineup in 2010. Not long afterward the band privately released its first demo and issued its debut album, The Aura, through PRC Music the following year. Philippe Boucher assumed the drum position in 2012, replacing Begin-Benoit. The group signed with Seasons of Mist in 2013, prompting the label to reissue The Aura; by then already possessing a substantial Canadian following, Beyond Creation embarked on tours of the United States and Japan, and the re-released album received widespread praise from critics and metal listeners alike. Earthborn Evolution appeared in 2014 and earned even stronger acclaim, spurring several years of intensive touring across the Americas and Europe that included headline dates, support slots with larger acts, and appearances at numerous major and smaller festivals.
During one of those runs Lapointe exited and was replaced by bassist Hugo Doyon-Karout, who stabilized the roster. The band remained largely on the road through 2017, releasing music videos for “Coexistence” and the title track of Earthborn Evolution as interim material while continuing to write amid constant travel. At the start of 2018 the musicians entered the studio and completed a third album. After issuing singles and videos for “Theatrical Delirium” and “The Inversion,” Beyond Creation undertook an American tour in support of Algorythm, which arrived in October.
