Psycroptic took shape as a fiercely uncompromising Australian death metal band whose sound drew from technical metalcore roots and high-velocity extreme metal, surfacing in the opening years of the 2000s. Their debut arrived via the self-released Isle of Disenchantment in 2001, after which the unit shared bills with such punishing peers as Cannibal Corpse and Aborted while delivering a series of acclaimed releases that included the 2008 Nuclear Blast album Ob(Servant) and the stylistically broad As the Kingdom Drowns in 2018.

Formed in 1999 on the isolated island state of Tasmania, the project united guitar-playing brothers Joe and David Haley with vocalist Matthew Chalk and bassist Cameron Grant. Operating from the capital Hobart, the quartet advanced swiftly from rehearsal recordings to the full-length The Isle of Disenchantment in 2001, then sustained activity through regional gigs and occasional festival slots until Scepter of the Ancients appeared in 2003, an LP that positioned them as serious international technical death metal contenders. The following year brought Australian support runs alongside Incantation and Deeds of Flesh, followed by European shows with Dismember, Anata, and Sanatorium that broadened their audience and secured a Neurotic Records agreement. Upon returning to Tasmania the band parted ways with Chalk, installing Jason Peppiatt—formerly of Born Headless, Yorta, and Bolverk—as vocalist and immediately tested the new configuration through local dates with Hate Eternal plus American performances supporting Deeds of Flesh. This refreshed lineup entered the studio for Symbols of Failure, issued in October 2006; the record earned widespread critical and fan approval, unlocking further prominent tours and ultimately a worldwide contract with Nuclear Blast. Their first album under that arrangement, the fourth studio effort Ob(Servant), surfaced in summer 2008. Four years afterward came The Inherited Repression, the final release on Nuclear Blast. The group next signed with Los Angeles metal label Prosthetic for its self-titled sixth studio album and remained with the imprint for the dynamic 2018 follow-up As the Kingdom Drowns.
