Biography
Italian band Fleshgod Apocalypse fuses symphonic elements with brutal death metal through an approach defined more by collision than fusion, resulting in music whose physical force exceeds even the intensity implied by its name. Across successive releases marked by growing intricacy, dissonance, and precision, the Roman ensemble has reshaped the international metal landscape through meticulously crafted compositions and an unyielding sonic assault that first emerged on the 2009 album Oracles. Lineup shifts did not hinder their expanding scope; instead, the group channeled greater ambition into the 2013 concept album Labyrinth, which drew from the ancient “Labyrinth of Knossos.”
Formed in Rome during 2007, the band quickly attracted attention via an early demo and support tours alongside Napalm Death and Hate Eternal. Willowtip Records soon signed the outfit and issued its debut full-length, Oracles, in 2009. With the core lineup of vocalist-guitarist Tommaso Riccardi, guitarist Cristiano Trionfera, bassist Paolo Rossi, and drummer Francesco Paoli now stable, Fleshgod Apocalypse continued refining its hybrid style, bringing pianist and string arranger Francesco Ferrini aboard full-time in 2010. The following year brought the second album, Agony, which placed the orchestral dimension at center stage. In 2013 Nuclear Blast released the third album, Labyrinth, earning the five-piece widespread praise from extreme-music outlets for its fully realized symphonic death metal identity. After extensive European and Italian touring plus prominent festival appearances, the musicians returned to the studio in late 2015, delivering King in early 2016.
In 2017 both guitarist Cristiano Trionfera and vocalist Tommaso Riccardi departed. Francesco Paoli assumed lead-vocal duties for the first time since 2009 while guest musicians covered Trionfera’s guitar parts on the road. Late in 2018 the band tracked Veleno—Italian for “venom”—with longtime collaborator Marco Mastrobuono; the sessions incorporated a complete orchestral string section and choir, with mixing and mastering handled by Jacob Hansen. Prior to the spring 2019 release, Paoli announced that the album would mark his final recorded appearance on drums now that he had become the permanent frontman, after which live drummer David Folchitto took over the drum chair.
