Biography
Finnish melodic death metal outfit Mors Principium Est, whose Latin name means "death is the beginning," surfaced in 2003 with a ferocious fusion of Swedish death metal and Norwegian black metal influences. Drawing sonic cues from peers including At the Gates, Children of Bodom, and Dark Tranquillity, the group delivered three favorably received albums before entering a brief hiatus following Liberation = Termination in 2007. Returning with a refreshed roster during the 2010s, they refined their frigid fusion of melody and aggression across later releases such as Embers of a Dying World (2017) and Seven (2020).
Originating from Pori and established in 1999, Mors Principium Est experienced frequent membership shifts in their formative period until stabilizing around vocalist Ville Viljanen, guitarists Jori Haukio and Jarkko Kokko, keyboardist Toni Nummelin, bassist Teemu Heinola, and drummer Mikko Sipola for several demo recordings. Rapidly sharpening their approach, the band secured a contract with French death metal imprint Listenable Records and unveiled their polished first album, Inhumanity, in 2003. Two further LPs followed on the same label—the equally acclaimed The Unborn in 2005 and Liberation = Termination in 2007—before successive personnel departures nearly prompted dissolution. Upon stabilizing their ranks anew, they signed with German metal heavyweight AFM Records, which issued their well-regarded fourth and fifth studio albums, ...And Death Said Live (2012) and Dawn of the 5th Era (2014). Embers of a Dying World surfaced in 2017, still under AFM, while the intense Seven appeared in 2020.
