Like numerous Danish heavy metal outfits, Mercenary endured years of limited interest from record labels during the early 1990s, as attention remained fixed on dominant acts from neighboring Sweden and Norway. The group originated in 1991 under vocalist and bassist Kral, also known as Hans Henrik Andersen, and continued without recognition until securing a recording contract in 1998 that yielded their aptly titled debut, First Breath. Two years afterward came the more developed Everblack, where Kral, vocalist Mikkel Sandager, guitarists Nikolai Brinkmann and Signar Petersen, keyboardist Morten Sandager, and drummer Rasmus Jakobsen shaped a style blending death metal, thrash, and power metal while emphasizing melody alongside concise compositions. Further personnel changes soon occurred, after which the refreshed guitar lineup of Jakob Moelbjerg, formerly of Panzerchrist, and Martin Buus Pedersen joined forces with drummer Mike Park. This updated configuration aligned with independent powerhouse Century Media to deliver the 2004 album 11 Dreams, supported by producer Jacob Hansen of Hatesphere and Raunchy renown as well as cover illustrator Niklas Sundin, known for work with Arch Enemy.
