Formed by seasoned figures from the heavy music underground, Scar Symmetry fuses the crushing intensity of death metal with the soaring melodies and ambitious structures of power and progressive metal. Their initial recordings, including Pitch Black Progress (2006) and Holographic Universe (2008), carried echoes of traditional Swedish death metal while emphasizing a strong melodic emphasis. The broader sonic palette of 2009’s Dark Matter Dimensions signaled a shift toward progressive complexity and storytelling focus. That direction expanded further on the 2014 release The Singularity (Phase I – Neohumanity), the opening chapter of a planned trilogy, which reached its conclusion with The Singularity (Phase II – Xenotaph) in 2023.

The group originated in 2004 when vocalist Christian Älvestam joined guitarists Jonas Kjellgren and Per Nilsson, bassist Kenneth Seil, and drummer Henrik Ohlsson, each already experienced from prior bands such as Carnal Forge, Centinex, Altered Aeon, and Incapacity. Their varied backgrounds shaped the project’s wide-ranging approach, first heard on 2005’s Symmetric in Design, where death and power metal elements merged with progressive touches reminiscent of Soilwork and Into Eternity. Nuclear Blast signed the band before the follow-up, Pitch Black Progress. Released in 2005, that album sharpened the contrast between extreme passages and anthemic choruses. Holographic Universe arrived in 2008, earned acclaim for its scientific themes, appeared on charts in Finland and Austria, and pushed the progressive side even harder; it marked the final album with Christian Älvestam, who departed soon after its completion.

Roberth Karlsson (growls/clean backing vocals) and Lars Palmqvist (clean/backing growls) stepped in as replacements and debuted on the expansive Dark Matter Dimensions in 2009. The conspiracy-themed The Unseen Empire followed in 2011, becoming the band’s strongest commercial performer by reaching multiple international charts and peaking at number 11 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart. Jonas Kjellgren exited in 2013 after scheduling conflicts arose with his commitments to Raubtier and Bourbon Boys. Guitarist Per Nilsson handled composition, production, mixing, and mastering for the conceptual The Singularity (Phase I – Neohumanity) in 2014, the first part of a narrative centered on transhumanism and artificial intelligence. A period of reduced activity, caused by separate projects, personal matters, and the COVID-19 pandemic, delayed the sequel. The Singularity (Phase II – Xenotaph) appeared in 2023, presenting a darker, more intricate continuation of the saga both narratively and technically.
