In Flames emerged as a pivotal Swedish heavy metal ensemble that shaped both the contemporary melodic death metal movement and the metalcore developments of the early 2000s. Their approach featured neo-classical guitar solos alongside inventive song structures, allowing the group to evolve from underground death metal roots into metal innovators on par with fellow Swedish acts Dark Tranquillity and At the Gates. The band surfaced during the mid-'90s and reached a commercial peak in 2002 through their sixth studio album, Reroute to Remain, which leaned toward alternative metal. Later works including A Sense of Purpose (2008), Siren Charms (2014), I, The Mask (2019), and Foregone (2023) refined this approach, securing both sales success and critical praise while earning multiple Swedish Grammy Awards.

Founding guitarist Jesper Strömblad departed Ceremonial Oath specifically to launch In Flames as an outlet for his songwriting ambitions, freeing him from a supporting role. Incorporating elements from Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath plus his own aggressive metal sensibilities that resonated strongly across Sweden, the project drew the attention of Wrong Again Records, which issued the 1993 debut Lunar Strain. Like many Swedish metal groups of the era, In Flames maintained a shifting roster that evolved annually, yet this flux did not prevent the 1994 follow-up Subterranean or their 1996 signing with Nuclear Blast Records.

The Jester Race appeared later that same year, with Whoracle arriving in 1997; by then the lineup had stabilized around Björn Gelotte on drums, Anders Fridén handling vocals, Peter Iwers on bass, and Daniel Svensson also on drums alongside Strömblad. Marking the occasion, the band delivered Colony as its sixth album in 1999. Clayman continued in a similar vein the following year, and the same personnel remained intact for that release. The live recording Tokyo Showdown documented their 2001 touring activities. The more focused yet intense Reroute to Remain surfaced in 2002, broadening the band's reach in the United States. Both Soundtrack to Your Escape in 2004 and Come Clarity in 2006 reached the top of charts domestically and internationally, the latter earning a Swedish Grammy Award. A Sense of Purpose, the ninth studio album, arrived in 2008 and included the single "Mirror's Truth," entering at number one on the Swedish albums chart. Sounds of a Playground Fading followed in 2011 as the first release without founding guitarist Strömblad, who had exited the previous year.

Pursuing a more progressive direction, the band issued its 11th album, Siren Charms, in 2014; this marked their debut on a major label, Epic. They embarked on a worldwide tour spanning 2014 and 2015 to support the record and captured a career retrospective performance at Gothenburg's Scandinavium, later released as the live album Sounds from the Heart of Gothenburg. Toward the close of 2015, longtime drummer Daniel Svensson stepped away to prioritize family. The group entered the studio in early 2016 using session drummer Joe Rickard from the American band Red for what became their 12th studio album. Responding to perceptions that Siren Charms had softened their edge, they reclaimed their classic style on the singles "The End" and "The Truth." Battles appeared in November 2016 via Nuclear Blast and Eleven Seven in the U.S., with Rickard confirmed as Svensson's permanent successor. The EP Down, Wicked & No Good, containing three covers plus a live track, followed in 2017. In July 2018 the band announced Rickard's replacement by Tanner Wayne, who debuted on the Howard Benson-produced 13th album I, The Mask, released in early 2019. The 2022 single "State of Slow Decay" heralded a return to the melodic death metal of earlier work and featured on the 14th studio album Foregone in 2023, which charted across multiple countries and introduced guitarist Chris Broderick in the studio.
