Evergrey

Emerging from the sonically intense Swedish city of Gothenburg in the closing years of the 1990s, the progressive/power metal outfit Evergrey forged a dark, technically formidable style shaped by influences ranging from Iron Maiden and Metallica to Kiss, Korn, and the Deftones. Guitarist and vocalist Tom S. Englund established the group in 1995 and has served as its only continuous member, guiding its blend of instrumental precision and thematically dense concepts that positioned Evergrey among Western Europe’s foremost purveyors of progressive metal spectacle.

Two favorably received albums, The Dark Discovery and Solitude, Dominance, Tragedy, appeared in 1998 and 1999 before the band achieved wider recognition with the 2001 concept release In Search of the Truth, centered on alien abduction. Subsequent works Recreation Day and The Inner Circle examined personal reconstruction and the subjects of cults, religion, and child abuse, respectively, while 2005 brought the live album and film A Night to Remember. Producers Sanken Sandquist and Stefan Glaumann oversaw the sixth studio effort, Monday Morning Apocalypse. Torn entered the Swedish album chart at number four in 2007; the next year Evergrey signed with Steamhammer/SPV, which reissued the group’s earlier catalog and broadened its global audience. After a change in lineup, Glorious Collision arrived in 2011 and earned substantial praise and sales, a reception repeated by Hymns for the Broken in 2014 and The Storm Within in 2016, both on AFM Records, the latter featuring guest appearances by Nightwish’s Floor Jansen. The band’s eleventh studio album, The Atlantic, surfaced in 2019, characterized by its heavy, somber, and stylistically varied approach. In late 2020 the single “Forever Outsider” previewed Escape of the Phoenix, an internationally charting set issued the following year. Evergrey made its Napalm Records debut in 2022 with A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament), merging brooding melodic progressive metal and emphatic power-metal force. Marking three decades in 2023, the band released From Dark Discoveries to Heartless Portraits, a fifteen-track collection that includes live recordings, demos, and piano-and-vocal interpretations drawn from A Heartless Portrait.
