Biography
Welsh four-piece Bullet for My Valentine emerged as one of Britain’s leading metal outfits during the 2000s, drawing from 1980s metal acts and punk-laced variants to shape melodic yet shadowy heavy-rock tracks. Their menacing mix of razor-sharp riffs and relentless drumming, paired with pop instincts, propelled them into the mainstream via landmark releases such as The Poison (2005), Fever (2010), and Temper Temper (2013), along with major singles including “Scream Aim Fire,” “Your Betrayal,” and “All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me),” establishing them as the most prominent U.K. metal act since Iron Maiden. The group unveiled their seventh studio album, the self-titled Bullet for My Valentine, in 2021 and showed no signs of easing up; in 2024 they confirmed they had returned to the studio for an eighth album slated for 2025.
Formed in Bridgend, South Wales—a hotbed that also produced Funeral for a Friend and LostProphets—the quartet comprised lifelong friends Matthew Tuck (vocals/guitar), Michael Padget (guitar/vocals), Jason James (bass/vocals), and Michael Thomas (drums). Every member except James had already spent several years together in Jeff Killed John. That earlier band dissolved when its bassist quit the day before entering the studio.
Rechristened Bullet for My Valentine with James now on board, the musicians refined their style and landed a deal with London’s Visible Noise after only their second performance. A self-titled EP surfaced in the U.K. during November 2004, followed by debut album The Poison the following autumn. One year later the band aligned with American imprint Trustkill for domestic distribution; Hand of Blood, essentially an expanded edition of their initial EP, reached U.S. listeners in August. That same year Bullet for My Valentine earned Kerrang!’s Best British Newcomer Award and topped the magazine’s XXV tour bill. The Poison arrived stateside in early 2006, supported by a national trek alongside Rob Zombie, and eventually surpassed 500,000 copies sold in America. The group also returned to the U.K. in June for a third Download Festival appearance.
Their second full-length, Scream Aim Fire, arrived in 2008 and reached the Top Ten in several territories, peaking at number five in the U.K. and number four in the U.S. After extensive touring they recruited Linkin Park producer Don Gilmore for the sessions that yielded 2010’s Fever, another strong chart performer that leaned slightly more mainstream. In 2012 Tuck paused briefly to record with side project AxeWound before rejoining the band for fourth album Temper Temper, released in 2013. The following year they began work with producer Colin Richardson on their next record, Venom, which appeared in summer 2015. Gravity, their sixth studio set and first with new drummer Jason Bowld, came out on Spinefarm Records in 2018 and performed solidly on the charts. Early 2021 brought the aggressive single “Knives,” featured on the band’s seventh and notably heavy self-titled album later that year; an expanded deluxe edition followed in 2022. Two years later they marked the twentieth anniversary of The Poison with a reissue and world tour while confirming that recording had commenced on their next studio album, due in 2025.
