Modern metalcore trailblazers Darkest Hour forged an unyielding sound built from melodic velocity, thrash metal foundations, and the fierce drive of punk and hardcore. As participants in the mid-’90s New Wave of American Metal, they first earned underground recognition before reaching broader audiences with Billboard-charting albums such as Deliver Us in 2007, Eternal Return in 2009, and Godless Prophets & the Migrant Flora in 2017. The veteran outfit issued its tenth studio album, Perpetual Terminal, in 2024.

Guitarist Mike Schleibaum, bassist Billups Allen, vocalist John Henry, guitarist Fred Ziomek, and drummer Ryan Parrish formed the group in Washington, D.C., and secured a contract with New York’s MIA Records in 1999. Their debut, The Mark of the Judas, arrived a year later, yet the label collapsed just as touring was about to begin. Undeterred, the band drew Victory Records’ attention and released the follow-up So Sedated, So Secure in July 2001. Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation followed in 2003 and was hailed by Revolver as a “metalcore classic.” Summer 2004 brought a second-stage appearance at Ozzfest. In February 2005 the documentary video set Prison Scars and Party Bars: A Thrashography chronicled their first decade (1995–2005) through music videos, live footage, and interviews. Undoing Ruin surfaced in June 2005, while A-F Records issued the rarities collection Archives—including the early EPs The Misanthrope (1996) and The Prophecy Fulfilled (1999)—that October. Deliver Us appeared in summer 2007 and Eternal Return in 2009; both debuted at number one on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. The latter was supported by opening slots for Trivium on the Summer Slaughter tour.

After a decade with Victory, the band exited in April and aligned with eOne. The Human Romance, produced by Soilwork’s Peter Wichers, emerged in February 2011 and entered the Heatseekers chart at number three. Extensive touring preceded Ryan Parrish’s departure in December and bassist Paul Burnette’s exit six months later; drummer Travis Orbin and bassist Aaron Deal ultimately filled the roles. Their eOne association proved brief, leading to a 2013 signing with Sumerian Records. Producer Taylor Larson, previously associated with I, the Breather and Periphery, guided a shift toward hook-driven, melodic death songwriting on the self-titled Darkest Hour, released in August 2014. Subsequent touring included anniversary performances marking Undoing Ruin’s tenth year, after which the band ran a successful crowdfunding campaign for new recordings. Converge’s Kurt Ballou produced Godless Prophets & the Migrant Flora at his GodCity studio in 2017, with Southern Lord handling distribution. Perpetual Terminal arrived in 2024, delivering a resilient collection of aughts-era melodic metalcore centered on survival and rebirth.
