Arch Enemy arose in 1995 as a Swedish melodic death metal supergroup whose members drew connections to Carcass, Armageddon, Carnage, Mercyful Fate, Spiritual Beggars, the Agonist, Nevermore, and Eucharist. The ensemble pursues a direct death metal style echoing Entombed or late-period Carcass, fusing memorable classic metal riffs with heavy grooves to produce music that feels both ferocious and widely appealing. Momentum built in the early 2000s when Doomsday Machine (2005) and Rise of the Tyrant (2007) both registered on international charts. Founder Michael Amott has remained the sole constant through repeated personnel shifts, allowing the band to sustain its output with later works such as War Eternal (2014), Will to Power (2017), and Deceivers (2022).

The original roster included Carcass guitarist Michael Amott along with bassist/vocalist Johan Liiva, both previously of Carnage, plus drummer Daniel Erlandsson from Eucharist; together they issued the debut Black Earth in 1996. Armageddon bassist Martin Bengtsson handled bass duties on the follow-up Stigmata (1998) after Liiva concentrated on vocals, while Armageddon drummer Peter Wildoer substituted for Erlandsson. Further changes brought Mercyful Fate reunion bassist Sharlee D'Angelo, also formerly of Witchery and Dismember, into the lineup for Burning Bridges (1999), which also welcomed Erlandsson back. Wages of Sin arrived in 2001, marking Johan Liiva’s exit and the arrival of Angela Gossow.

Extensive touring throughout Europe and Japan preceded the 2003 release of Anthems of Rebellion. By year’s end the band issued the EP Dead Eyes See No Future, mixing covers with live recordings. Doomsday Machine appeared in July 2005 just as guitarist Christopher Amott announced his departure; former Tiamat member Fredrik Åkesson stepped in, only for the pair to exchange roles again two years later when Åkesson left for Opeth and Amott reclaimed the position. Rise of the Tyrant followed in 2007 as the group’s seventh album and its strongest commercial showing to that point, prompting joint tours with Swedish metal acts Opeth and Dark Tranquillity. In 2009 the retrospective The Root of All Evil presented re-recorded versions of material from the first three albums featuring current vocalist Angela Gossow. Khaos Legions, the eighth studio album, surfaced in 2011 with fresh original songs and became the band’s highest-charting release yet; it also marked Gossow’s final album before her departure the next year.

War Eternal arrived in 2014 and introduced ex-Agonist vocalist Alissa White-Gluz plus ex-Arsis guitarist Nick Cordle, the latter replaced shortly before the European tour by former Nevermore guitarist Jeff Loomis. The 2017 concert release As the Stages Burn documented the full 2016 Wacken Open Air set together with a 2015 Tokyo performance. That same year the band delivered Will to Power, its tenth studio album and first to incorporate clean vocals. Covered in Blood, a collection of covers, appeared in early 2019 and included renditions of tracks by Judas Priest, Tears for Fears, Queensrÿche, and others. Deceivers, the eleventh full-length, emerged in 2022 and incorporated symphonic metal textures into the group’s established sound.
