Biography
Suffocation emerged in late-eighties New York as a brutal/technical death metal unit whose original members included vocalist Frank Mullen, guitarists Doug Cerrito and Terrance Hobbs, bassist Chris Richards, and drummer Mike Smith. Their 1991 Roadrunner debut Effigy of the Forgotten quickly became a touchstone across grind and death circles, and the 1993 follow-up Breeding of the Spawn earned widespread critical praise. After the Human Waste EP, Mike Smith departed and Doug Bohn took the drum stool; that configuration delivered 1995’s Pierced from Within before the group dissolved amid label difficulties and creative uncertainty.
A long-shelved recording, Despise the Sun, finally surfaced through Relapse in summer 2002. Late 2003 saw the band reconvene, and the return of Mike Smith helped shape 2004’s Souls to Deny, which ended the hiatus. The self-titled fifth album appeared in 2006, followed in 2009 by Blood Oath—their first Billboard entry, where it reached number two on the Heatseekers chart and number 135 on the Top 200. Joe Cincotta produced 2013’s Pinnacle of Bedlam, which again peaked at number two on Heatseekers and number 153 on the Billboard 200.
By the time …Of the Dark Light arrived in 2017, Mullen and Hobbs remained the sole constants alongside bassist Derek Boyer (a member since 2004), guitarist Charlie Errigo, and drummer Eric Morotti, both of whom joined in 2016 and made their studio debuts on that Cincotta-helmed set. Although the record bypassed the American charts, it registered strongly across several European territories. Nuclear Blast issued the 2018 Cambridge, Massachusetts concert recording Live in North America in 2021, marking Mullen’s final performance before his retirement at the close of 2019. Disgorge drummer Ricky Myers assumed vocal duties for the ninth studio album, 2023’s Hymns from the Apocrypha.
