Biography
Emerging from Brazil during the 1990s, the three brothers who comprise Krisiun delivered an unyielding brand of extreme metal whose ferocious lyrics, crushing riffs, and unrelenting speed placed the act among the most severe outfits of that era. Drawing heavily from Slayer, Sodom, and Morbid Angel, the group forged a direct and merciless death metal approach that reached full intensity on landmark releases including Apocalyptic Revelation (1998), Conquerors of Armageddon (2000), and The Great Execution (2011), inspiring numerous followers. Scourge of the Enthroned, issued in 2018, reached the charts in Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland. After extensive touring and the worldwide COVID-19 shutdown, Krisiun unveiled Mortem Solis in July 2022.
Formed in 1990 in Porto Alegre and named after the lunar basin Mare Crisium, the band consists of Alex Camargo on bass and vocals (who adopted his mother’s maiden name), Moyses Kolesne on guitar, and Max Kolesne on drums. Early recordings such as the 1991 demo Evil Age, the 1992 demo Curse of the Evil One, and the independently released 1993 mini-album Unmerciful Order cultivated a loyal regional audience and secured a contract with the Brazilian imprint Dynamo. That label released the debut full-length Black Force Domain in 1996; Gun Records later licensed it for broader reach and also put out the well-regarded follow-up Apocalyptic Revolution in 1998. Century Media subsequently signed the trio and issued Conquerors of Armageddon in early 2000. The new label supported extensive international touring alongside Vader, Belphegor, and Rotting Christ, as well as a series of consistently savage albums: Ageless Venomous (2001), Works of Carnage (2003), Bloodshed (2004), Assassination (2006), and Southern Storm (2008), the last featuring an intense rendition of Sepultura’s “Refuse/Resist.” The Great Execution arrived in 2011 to widespread acclaim within extreme metal circles, followed by the more doom-oriented Forged in Fury in 2015. Clocking in at thirty-eight minutes, Scourge of the Enthroned revived the rapid-fire riffing and raw aggression of the band’s earliest work, earning international press accolades and marking their first European chart entry.
After two lengthy tours and the COVID-19 pandemic, Krisiun entered Family Mob Studio in São Paulo, Brazil, in late 2021 to track nine self-produced tracks. The recordings were then sent to Mark Lewis in Nashville, Tennessee, for mixing and mastering. Released under the title Mortem Solis with cover art by Marcelo Vasco, the album was preceded by the June video single “Serpent Messiah.”
