Monstrosity originated as a death metal group in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, during October 1990, with an initial lineup of vocalist George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher, guitarist Jon Rubin, bassist Mark Van Erp, and drummer Lee Harris. Two months after assembling, they captured their first demo, whose underground traction earned them a contract from Nuclear Blast. Imperial Doom arrived in early 1992, followed by a European tour alongside Pestilence and a subsequent relocation to the Tampa area that prompted Rubin’s exit. Jason Morgan joined on guitar, enabling support slots for Pantera and Obituary, although several years elapsed before new material surfaced. Shortly after inking a deal with Conquest Music, Van Erp departed and Kelly Conlon stepped in on bass; the revised lineup finished the 1996 sophomore album Millennium. Fisher then accepted an invitation to join Cannibal Corpse, with Jason Avery, formerly the frontman of Eulogy, assuming vocal duties. Morgan left in mid-1997 as well, after which Jamie Harris entered on guitar and the band tracked its third LP, In Dark Purity, released by Slipdisc in 1999. Enslaving the Masses followed two years later on Conquest.
