Biography
Distinguished among French metal acts by their commitment to refined studio techniques and detachment from black metal traditions, Gorod operates as a technical death metal ensemble. Bassist Benoit Claus assembled the group under the name Gorgasm in 1997 alongside vocalist Guillaume Martinot, guitarist Arnaud Pontaco, and drummer Sandrine Bourguignon, initially performing at intimate venues and underground spaces near their hometown. Their five-track self-titled demo appeared in 2000, quickly building local recognition, while a four-track promotional release followed in 2001.
The lineup expanded to five members in 2004 when guitarist Mathieu Pascal joined, prompting a name change to Gorod that sidestepped overlap with the Chicago band Gorgasm. Deadsun Records issued their first full-length effort, Neurotripsicks, that same year, with Pennsylvania's Willowtip handling a domestic reissue in 2005. Willowtip next delivered the follow-up, Leading Vision, in 2006; strong critical response enabled European road work and an appearance at Maryland's DeathFest, marking the final recording with the founding members intact.
Bourguignon departed at the close of 2008, with ex-Zubrowska drummer Sam Santiago stepping in ahead of sessions for Process of a New Decline, which surfaced in 2009. Santiago's emphasis on precision, speed, and rhythmic drive elevated the group's approach, leading to European dates supporting New York death metal act Immolation plus festival slots at Neurotic DeathFest, Midwest Fuckfest, and Maryland Deathfest. Additional French headline performances included a main-stage set at Hellfest and a Paris concert with Cynic, after which the band joined Cattle Decapitation for summer European shows. Pontaco and Martinot exited shortly thereafter; by year's end, Julien "Nutz" Deyres assumed vocal duties while Nicolas "Nico" Alberny took the second guitar role.
This configuration cut the five-song Transcendence EP in 2011 for BUD Studio, encompassing acoustic renditions of longstanding tracks, a cover of Cynic's "Textures," and the expansive fifteen-minute title piece. Following further European touring, the musicians entered the studio in autumn 2011 under French producer Frederic "Elmobo" Motte, resulting in the Listenable Records release A Perfect Absolution in spring 2012. The album showcased denser progressive textures alongside melodic hooks, with guest solos supplied by Obscura's Christian Muenzner and the Faceless's Mike Keene. Promotion encompassed a European package tour with Obscura, Spawn of Possession, and Exivious; VS webzine later named it "Best French Metal Album of the Year," while numerous international reviewers included it among their top selections.
Gorod maintained an extensive schedule through 2013, headlining French concerts, traversing the United States and Canada, performing at Hammersonic Jakarta/Indonésia—the principal metal event in Southeast Asia—and completing an inaugural Japanese run. Santiago departed post-tour, succeeded by longtime associate and Hell in Town drummer Karol Diers. After further rehearsal and live activity, the band tracked A Maze of Recycled Creeds, completed in early 2015 and issued that October.
