Biography
Hailing from Los Angeles, the American metal quartet Abysmal Dawn specializes in a ferocious strain of contemporary death metal that fuses thrash, blackened, and technical components. Charles Elliott serves as the sole continuous member, handling vocals, guitar, and production. Few acts in the United States scene match their relentless schedule. Following the 2004 self-titled demo, the group maintained near-constant road work throughout North America, South America, and Europe while sharpening its approach. Their debut full-length, From Ashes, established them on both sides of the Atlantic as an inventive outfit determined to disrupt the domestic landscape. Subsequent releases such as 2011’s Leveling the Plane of Existence demonstrated a shift toward angular yet emphatic grooves within their blackened death-metal framework, and the accompanying live shows attracted a new audience. By the arrival of Obsolescence in 2014, the combination of classic rhythms, contemporary technical execution, and elevated production values had expanded their reach among South American listeners alongside their established American and European following.
Charles Elliott founded Abysmal Dawn in Los Angeles during 2003 alongside guitarist Jamie Boulanger, bassist Carlos Arriola, and drummer Terry Barajas. The self-titled 2004 demo and the 2006 debut album From Ashes earned comparisons to mentors Suffocation and Carcass through their brutal death-metal approach. Programmed to Consume appeared in 2008 on Relapse with Mike Cosio now on bass; Elliott intentionally foregrounded thrash-inflected riffs and forceful blastbeats to honor early death-metal traditions. After a subsequent tour Boulanger departed in 2008, with Ian Jekelis of Abigail Williams stepping in. Constant touring persisted until Barajas exited in 2009 after years of road fatigue; Scott Fuller joined the following year. The resulting trio refined its sound during nearly twelve months of live activity. In 2011 the group recorded Leveling the Plane of Existence for Relapse, which became its strongest commercial performer largely due to repeated appearances at North American metal festivals. Cosio left after the tour cycle and was succeeded by Eliseo Garcia, who also contributed additional vocals.
Late in 2013, ahead of a tour previewing new material, Andy Nelson joined as second guitarist, restoring quartet status. Obsolescence emerged in 2014, co-produced by Elliott and Mike Bear; European festival appearances helped generate stronger reception on that continent than domestically. Nelson and Fuller both exited in 2016 amid touring pressures. James Coppolino, formerly of Insentient, took over drums, returning the band to a trio until guitarist Vito Petroni arrived in 2017. That year Abysmal Dawn focused on developing a markedly technical direction filled with angular, intricate riffs, dissonant shifts, and sudden metric changes.
Elliott convened Garcia and Coppolino at his professional studio for exploratory sessions while composing fresh songs. Once Petroni was officially integrated, Elliott and the drummer tracked their parts without an external deadline; Petroni and Garcia added theirs afterward. Seasons of Mist issued the resulting album, Phylogenesis, in April 2020 amid the worldwide novel-coronavirus lockdown. Although live activity remained impossible, the record received uniformly favorable notices for its inventive rhythmic and textural choices.
