Biography
In 1989, singer and guitarist Jon Nödtveidt joined bassist Peter Palmdahl to establish the death metal band Dissection in Gothenburg, Sweden. Drummer Ole Öhman came aboard the next spring, after which the trio produced its opening demo, The Grief Prophecy. The 1991 Corpsegrinder single "Into Infinite Obscurity" preceded a second demo titled The Somberlain; that recording earned the group a deal with No Fashion Records and yielded its debut album of the same name, featuring second guitarist John Zwetsloot, in late 1993. Johan Norman stepped in for Zwetsloot on the 1995 follow-up, Storm of the Light's Bane. In July 1997, however, Nödtveidt and an associate were accused of the brutal slaying of an Algerian homosexual; both men were found guilty, and Nödtveidt received an eight-year sentence that dissolved the band.
Öhman launched a new project called Reaper, and the 1998 rarities set The Past is Alive seemed to close the chapter. The extended quiet ended with the 2003 box set Live Legacy, and Nödtveidt’s release the following year enabled him to resurrect the Dissection name, beginning with the two-song Maha Kali EP, portions of which had been tracked during his incarceration. An attempted collaboration with former Emperor drummer Bard Faust never materialized, yet by late 2005 Nödtveidt had recruited guitarist Set Teitan of Aborym, bassist Brice Leclercq of Nightrage, and drummer Tomas Asklund, formerly of Dark Funeral. This lineup delivered the well-received third studio album Reinkaos, released in May 2006 by The End Records and celebrated on the live DVD Rebirth of Dissection.
Summer touring plans ended abruptly when the band announced an impending split after a final run of U.S. dates, which were themselves canceled over entry-visa obstacles tied to Nödtveidt’s criminal record. While fans were still absorbing that development, reports circulated that the 31-year-old Nödtveidt had died by self-inflicted gunshot to the head, surrounded by candles inside his Stockholm, Sweden, apartment, on or about August 16, 2006. Shortly beforehand, he reportedly mailed farewell letters to his father and several acquaintances, one of which read, "I'm going away for a long, long time. I'm going to Transylvania."
