Watain stands among the most prominent and infamous acts within extreme metal, having surfaced at the start of the 2000s with a style grounded in the frigid traditions of Scandinavian black metal. The group’s reputation rests on its incendiary stage performances and adherence to theistic Satanism, achievements that merge visceral dread with instrumental precision across key recordings such as Lawless Darkness (2010), The Wild Hunt (2013), Trident Wolf Eclipse, and The Agony and Ecstasy of Watain (2022).

Formed in Uppsala, Sweden, during 1998, the band swiftly earned underground respect through its debut 7" The Essence of Black Purity. That foundation was reinforced by the 2000 full-length Rabid Death’s Curse, an album whose lyrics repeatedly invoked Satan and his followers yet whose playing demonstrated clear technical command. Subsequent output has maintained the same extreme trajectory while attracting growing recognition, encompassing the live recording Ritual Macabre (2000), the split single The Misanthropic Ceremonies with Diabolicum (2001), the studio album Casus Luciferi (2003), Sworn to the Dark (2007), Lawless Darkness (2010), The Wild Hunt (2013), Trident Wolf Eclipse (2018), and The Agony and Ecstasy of Watain (2022). In 2023 the ensemble marked its twenty-fifth year by issuing the concert album Die in Fire: Live in Hell (Agony and Ecstasy Over Stockholm).

Departing from the frequent personnel shifts common in underground metal, Watain has retained a steady roster across its entire history, consisting of vocalist/bassist Erik Danielsson (also editor of the Hellish Massacre 'zine and visual artist behind Cold Seed Creations), guitarists P. Forsberg and Set Teitan, bassist Tore Stjerna (who occasionally produces and operates Necromorbus Studio), and drummer H. Jonsson.
