Norwegian black metal outfit Tsjuder took its name from an ancient tribe of Russian barbarians and came together in 1993 when bassist/vocalist Nag and guitarist Berserk decided to join forces. Guitarist Drauglin came aboard the following year and contributed to the band's inaugural demo, Ved Ferdens Ende, issued in 1995. Berserk soon exited, yet the group pressed ahead, first enlisting drummer Torvus for the 1996 demo Possessed and then Desecrator, who performed on the 1997 EP Throne of the Goat. Their ferociously relentless, high-velocity style—echoing pioneers such as Mayhem and Darkthrone—began attracting independent labels, leading At War Records to issue the promotional recording Atum Nocturnem. Drakkar Productions subsequently put out the full-length albums Kill for Satan in 2000 and Demonic Possession in 2002, after which Season of Mist released Desert Northern Hell in 2004. Throughout this period an ever-changing roster of supporting players rotated around core members Nag and Drauglin, with Anti-Christ handling drums in the most recent configuration.
