The Norwegian black metal ensemble Ragnarok, distinct from the Swedish progressive rock act of the same name that emerged in the 1970s, took shape in 1994 out of the dismantled project Thoth. Drummer Jontho, born John Thomas Bratland, joined forces with bassist Jerv along with guitarist Rym, whose full name is Øyvind Trindborg, and vocalist Thyme, also known as General Hymer. Drawn to themes of Satanism and malevolence, the band issued its first recording, Nattferd, whose title translates as “A Journey Through the Night,” in 1995 and later recruited Dimmu Borgir’s Shagrath to contribute keyboards on the 1997 release Arising Realm. Remaining active, the group continued its tributes to the dark lord with the 2000 album Diabolical Age, followed by In Nomine Satanas in 2002, which marked the arrival of vocalist U. Høst, and Blackdoor Miracle in 2004.
