Biography
Hailing from western Germany, Blind Guardian took shape in the mid-'80s by merging gothic- and fantasy-infused European power metal with the rapid drive and exacting technique of speed metal. The group established itself as a mainstay across power, progressive, and neo-classical metal after issuing the raw, thrash-oriented Battalions of Fear in 1988, later producing landmark works such as Nightfall in Middle-Earth in 1998, A Night at the Opera in 2002, and A Twist in the Myth in 2006, as well as orchestral efforts including Legacy of the Dark Lands in 2019 that pair imaginative storytelling with superior musicianship. Issued in 2022, God Machine marks the band's twentieth full-length release.
The members—vocalist and bassist Hansi Kürsch, guitarist Marcus Siepen, guitarist André Olbrich, and drummer Thomen Stauch—first assembled in the modest town of Krefeld under the name Lucifer's Heritage before switching identities once their 1986 demo began circulating widely underground. They joined the No Remorse label and delivered the thrash-heavy Battalions of Fear in 1988, then the similarly styled Follow the Blind the next year, which expanded their reach in Japan. The 1990 album Tales from the Twilight World retained speed yet leaned further into power metal and gained underground traction in Germany, prompting a contract with Virgin Records' German branch. Their major-label debut Somewhere Far Beyond appeared in 1992 and inspired the nickname "bards" for fans, drawn from the two-part track "Bard's Song." Following the 1993 live set Tokyo Tales, Blind Guardian collaborated with former Metallica producer Flemming Rasmussen on the well-received Imaginations from the Other Side in 1995. The 1996 release The Forgotten Tales gathered covers and alternate takes, paving the way for the breakthrough Nightfall in Middle-Earth in 1998, a sweeping Tolkien-inspired concept album that also served as the band's first American-issued record.
Century Media started reissuing segments of the catalog stateside the subsequent year, and in 2002 the band unveiled A Night at the Opera, their most progressive and elaborately produced effort to that point. A Twist in the Myth arrived in 2006, featuring abundant guitarmonies and symphonic touches while drawing lyrical material from Stephen King's Dark Tower series and Dante Alighieri's Inferno. The ninth studio album, At the Edge of Time, surfaced in 2010, succeeded by the 2012 compilation Memories of a Time to Come that reworked and remixed earlier material. Beyond the Red Mirror, the tenth studio album and a concept sequel to Imaginations from the Other Side, emerged in 2015. During the Nightfall in Middle-Earth sessions, guitarist André Olbrich and vocalist Hansi Kürsch explored expanding their power-metal foundation into more elaborate territory; the outcome was the ambitious, fully orchestral double album Legacy of the Dark Lands, issued in 2019 under the name Blind Guardian's Twilight Orchestra. God Machine, the first proper studio album since Beyond the Red Mirror and a return to the epic power-metal style of earlier works, appeared in 2022.
