An American power metal ensemble that has long enjoyed fervent support across Europe, Virgin Steele weaves classical elements into a symphonic framework steeped in romantic grandeur. Formed during the autumn of 1981, the band has been guided from the outset by vocalist and keyboardist David DeFeis. Its early years yielded two independently issued albums whose subsequent international licensing generated roughly 400,000 combined units and underground acclaim, prompting British magazine Kerrang! to liken the group to vintage Judas Priest. The distinctive fusion of classical, metal, and progressive idioms reached full expression on the third release, 1985’s Noble Savage, whose melodic might invited parallels with like-minded acts such as Manowar and Queensrÿche; the record also signaled the exit of founding guitarist Jack Starr, whose straightforward anthems had diverged from DeFeis’s expansive vision, and the arrival of accomplished guitarist Edward Pursino.

The next effort, Age of Consent, adopted a more accessible stance aimed at both dedicated and broader metal audiences. Managerial and contractual difficulties then triggered an extended pause, broken in the early nineties by renewed German interest. Although the subsequent Life Among the Ruins retained much of the eighties aesthetic, the ensuing trilogy The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Pt. 1 (1995), Pt. 2 (1996), and Invictus (1998) delivered potent neo-classical epics that thrived commercially in Europe and Japan. Continuing the theatrical trajectory, the ambitious metal opera House of Atreus, Act I appeared in 1999 under the subtitle “A Barbaric-Romantic Opera,” with Act II following in 2000. Chamber-music textures informed the Gnostic-themed concept album Visions of Eden in 2006, which, like its predecessor, received a local stage adaptation by Landestheater Production.

The power-metal-centric twelfth studio album, The Black Light Bacchanalia, marked Virgin Steele’s debut on SPV/Steamhammer in 2010, while the label’s second release, the explosive Nocturnes of Hellfire & Damnation, arrived in 2015. Marking thirty-five years, the comprehensive box set Seven Devils Moonshine emerged in 2018, encompassing five full-length titles, three of them featuring newly written material and re-recordings. After an eight-year absence from the studio, 2023 brought Passion of Dionysus, an expansive and inventive work centered on a contemporary parable exploring dominion and liberty.
