Adrian Vandenberg, the virtuosic guitarist of Dutch-American lineage, fronts the pop-leaning hard rock outfit that carries his name. Three studio albums appeared between 1982 and 1985, the first two—1983’s Vandenberg and 1983’s Heading for a Storm—both reaching the Billboard 200. Operations ended in 1987 once Vandenberg entered Whitesnake. He revived the project in 2020 with an entirely new lineup, issuing the aptly named 2020 before Sin arrived in 2023.

After his prior group Teaser folded, the Netherlands-born six-string specialist formed the initial lineup, which featured Bert Heerink on vocals, Dick Kemper on bass, and Jos Zoomer on drums. A strong demo landed a contract with Atlantic, freeing Vandenberg from the session work and super-realist art that had supported him. Captured at Jimmy Page’s Sol Studios in England, the self-titled debut gained traction in the U.S. when “Burning Heart” climbed to number 39 on the Billboard 100. Largely self-produced and marked by a heavy melodic style akin to the Scorpions, the album highlighted Vandenberg’s incisive playing and songcraft, both of which caught David Coverdale’s attention and prompted two offers to join Whitesnake. Although 1983’s meticulously shaped Heading for a Storm reflected the band’s growing experience, it did not match the debut’s success. The 1985 release Alibi presented a set of radio-ready hard rock tracks distinguished by sharper production and more intense fretwork from Vandenberg. Heerink’s departure the following year initiated a decline that ended with the band’s 1987 dissolution, when Vandenberg finally accepted Coverdale’s persistent invitation to join the rising Whitesnake.

In 2020 Adrian Vandenberg disclosed a re-tooled roster that included ex-Rainbow vocalist Ronnie Romero, bassist Randy Van Der Elsen of Tank, and drummer Koen Herfst of Epica. Issued later that year, 2020 contained a fresh version of “Burning Heart” and guest appearances by Whitesnake alums Rudy Sarzo on bass and Brian Tichy on drums. Producer Bob Marlette, whose credits include Ozzy Osbourne and Alice Cooper, shaped the fifth album. Released in 2023 through Mascot Label Group, Sin introduced new vocalist Mats Levén on his first studio recording with the band.
