Guitarist Luca Turilli and keyboardist Alex Staropoli launched the Italian ensemble Rhapsody of Fire, which forged the symphonic power metal style through expansive classical orchestration and choral forces blended with standard rock instruments. Originally operating as Rhapsody, the group took shape as a five-piece during the closing years of the 1990s. Their opening quartet of recordings—Legendary Tales from 1997, Symphony of Enchanted Lands from 1998, Dawn of Victory from 2000, and Power of the Dragonflame from 2002—formed consecutive installments of the interconnected mythic narrative known as The Emerald Sword Saga, which simultaneously opened the broader sequence titled The Algalord Chronicles. The next narrative arc, The Dark Secret Saga, opened with Symphony of Enchanted Lands, Vol. 2: Dark Secret in 2004 and advanced through Triumph or Agony in 2006, both employing a 70-piece orchestra and choir. The concluding portion of the Algalord sequence commenced with The Frozen Tears of Angels in 2010, proceeded via the 35-minute EP The Cold Embrace of Fear: A Dark Romantic Symphony issued at year’s end, and reached completion with From Chaos to Eternity in 2011, thereby ending The Dark Secret Saga. Following these releases Turilli departed on amicable terms, ushering in successive personnel shifts. Dark Wings of Steel arrived in 2016 as the first independent full-length outside any overarching chronicle. The Eighth Mountain appeared in 2018 to begin The Nephilim’s Empire Saga; the story continued on the I’ll Be Your Hero EP released in June 2021 and on the subsequent album Glory for Salvation issued later that same year. Three years afterward the band delivered Challenge the Wind, thereby closing the trilogy.

Rhapsody of Fire originated under the name Thundercross in 1993. Turilli set out to assemble a symphonic metal outfit that would fuse substantial classical components with metal structures. Drummer Daniele Carbonera and keyboardist-composer-arranger Alex Staropoli became the first musicians to align with him. Seeking a designation more attuned to the conceptual storytelling they intended to pursue, the musicians adopted the moniker Rhapsody and issued the 35-minute, seven-track demo Eternal Glory in 1995, featuring bassist Andrea Furlan and vocalist Cristiano Adacher. By the time Legendary Tales reached the market in 1997, launching both The Emerald Sword Saga and The Algalord Chronicles, Furlan and Adacher had exited, leaving classically trained vocalist Fabio Lione (formerly of Labyrinth) to handle lead vocals.

Produced in Germany by Sascha Paeth, who additionally supplied bass lines, the debut integrated classical, Baroque, and heavy metal idioms within a hybrid the group labeled “film score metal” to highlight its kinship with cinematic soundtracks. Symphony of Enchanted Lands extended the cycle in 1998 and introduced bassist Alessandro Lotta while marking Carbonera’s final appearance. Although 1999 remained largely inactive for the band, both Turilli and Lione issued solo projects that year.

Once their initial tour concluded, Rhapsody returned to the studio alongside Paeth to capture Dawn of Victory. The orchestral and choral elements had grown further to match the group’s expansive vision; the album reached number four on the Japanese charts and prompted the first South American and European headlining runs.

Preceding the charting fourth album, the 42-minute introductory EP Rain of a Thousand Flames appeared in 2000 and both narratively and musically anticipated the close of The Emerald Sword Saga. Narration was supplied by Sir Jay Lansford, while the Helmstedt Kammerchoir, violinist Maggie Ardorf, and Baroque opera singer Constanze Backes participated, alongside the first recorded appearance of drummer Thunderforce. The EP earned widespread acclaim for its sweeping scope and sonic intensity. After touring concluded, Lotta departed; Paeth again performed bass duties on Power of the Dragonflame, released in 2002. That album completed The Emerald Sword Saga, received the strongest reviews the band had garnered thus far, and carried The Algalord Chronicles forward into the subsequent saga. Prior to the supporting tour the group recruited drummer Alex Holzwarth and bassist Patrice Guers.

In 2004 the five-track EP The Dark Secret inaugurated The Dark Secret Saga; it included guest narration from actor Christopher Lee, performances by the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra and the Brno Academy Choir, plus assorted classical soloists. Second guitarist Dominique Leurquin, already a touring member since 2000, made his studio debut here. Symphony of Enchanted Lands, Vol. 2: Dark Secret followed months later. Recorded concurrently and employing the same augmented personnel, the album also featured Lee singing alongside Lione on “The Magic of the Wizard’s Dream.” Reviewers noted its increasingly progressive character, while the band described it as their heaviest statement to that point. European concert dates sold out rapidly, and the group performed on larger festival stages than previously.

The following year, facing copyright conflicts with a corporation sharing the name Rhapsody, the musicians adopted the new designation Rhapsody of Fire. Triumph or Agony, issued in 2006 as the second installment of The Dark Secret Saga, demonstrated that the ensemble’s elaborately structured, progressive, Baroque-inflected power metal identity remained intact. A live 70-piece orchestra and choir participated; Turilli and Staropoli served as self-producers with Paeth assisting as co-producer.

Nuclear Blast released the ambitious third chapter Frozen Tears of Angels, which was succeeded by the 35-minute EP The Cold Embrace of Fear: A Dark Romantic Symphony. Both The Dark Secret Saga and The Algalord Chronicles concluded with From Chaos to Eternity in 2011, an album that expanded the lineup through the addition of rhythm guitarist Tom Hess and Leurquin while again featuring Lee together with five additional narrators.

That release coincided with the amicable exits of co-founder Turilli and bassist Guers. The pair subsequently formed Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody, and with Staropoli’s concurrence they presented Rhapsody’s history as shared property until their eventual separation. Hess assumed lead guitar duties briefly before Oliver Holzwarth replaced Guers on bass; Roby De Micheli joined as sole guitarist at the end of September, succeeding Hess. The From Chaos to Eternity World Tour commenced in spring 2012, encompassing three continents as the band’s largest and longest trek. December brought a signing with AFM Records, and Live: From Chaos to Eternity appeared in May 2013, captured during the European leg.

Later that year the reconstituted Rhapsody of Fire issued Dark Wings of Steel, its first album existing independently of The Algalord Chronicles. Despite the absence of Turilli’s signature neoclassical guitar work, the recording achieved strong sales and higher chart placements than any prior effort. Bassist Oliver Holzwarth departed in August and was succeeded by Alessandro Sala in early 2015; Sala had previously collaborated with De Micheli in Sinestesia.

Into the Legend surfaced in January 2016 with new drummer Manu Lotter. Although the album received broad praise—Staropoli’s compositions earning appreciation comparable to Turilli’s—Lione and Alex Holzwarth exited after a brief, well-received promotional tour in September. Two months later Turilli, Lione, Guers, Leurquin, and Alex Holzwarth announced a Rhapsody of Fire 20th Anniversary Farewell Tour for 2017, running parallel to Staropoli’s current lineup. The tour opened in April 2017; the former members performed Legendary Tales and Symphony of Enchanted Lands across year-long engagements that concluded in March 2018.

Concurrently Staropoli recruited vocalist Giacomo Voli and drummer Manu Lotter. Their first studio appearances occurred on the 2017 album Legendary Years, comprising re-recordings of key tracks from the Rhapsody era. The refreshed lineup headlined Trieste Summer Rock Festival in July and supported Orden Ogan that autumn.

In March 2018 Rhapsody of Fire revealed via Facebook that The Eighth Mountain had been completed as the opening chapter of The Nephilim’s Empire Saga. Issued February 22, 2019, the album featured lyrics co-written by Voli and De Micheli recounting its protagonist’s escape from hell with Nephilim assistance. Although Lee had died in 2015, residual narration from an earlier session with Staropoli remained. During the 2020 quarantine Lotter announced his departure and was replaced by Paolo Marchesich. Alongside the personnel update Staropoli confirmed completion of new material. The eight-song, 40-minute EP I’ll Be Your Hero appeared in June 2021 as a preview of concepts developed on the full-length Glory for Salvation, released later that year.

Two separate world tours followed. After a hiatus the band reconvened, issuing the single “Kreel’s Magic Staff” in May 2023 and the title-track single “Challenge the Wind” in February 2024 for their fourteenth studio album. March brought the third advance single “A Brave New Hope.” In May Challenge the Wind served as the trilogy’s final installment and became the first Rhapsody of Fire long-player written without Turilli’s involvement.
