Enrik Garcia, a guitarist based in Madrid, launched Dark Moor in 1994, establishing the group as one of Spain’s most enduring heavy metal acts. Prior to securing a record contract, the band refined its fantasy-infused power metal style through three demo releases: Tales of the Dark Moor in 1996, Dreams of Madness in 1998, and Flying in 1999. The independent Arise label subsequently issued the band’s debut full-length album, Shadowland, in 1999. Later projects encompassed The Hall of the Olden Dreams in 2000, the EP The Fall of Melnibone in 2001, The Gates of Oblivion in 2002, and the EP Between Light & Darkness in 2003. These recordings drew comparisons to European power metal outfits such as Rhapsody and Blind Guardian while gaining traction in key markets including Germany, Japan, and Brazil. A stable lineup of Garcia, vocalist Elisa Candelas Martín, guitarist Albert Maroto, bassist Anan Kaddouri, keyboardist Roberto Peña de Camus, and drummer Jorge Sáez handled all of those releases. A profound creative rift, however, split the band before the self-titled 2003 album, prompting the formation of rival act Dreamaker and leaving only Garcia and Kaddouri to enlist vocalist Alfred Romero, guitarist José Garrido, and drummer Andy C. Although the group’s fundamental musical traits remained intact, the departure of Elisa Martin eliminated a distinctive feature, as exceptional female metal vocalists are uncommon. Kaddouri exited the following year and was replaced by bassist Dani Fernandez, enabling Dark Moor to continue with the 2005 release Beyond the Sea.
