Biography
Emerging from Milan’s underground scene toward the close of the 1990s, Lacuna Coil quickly drew notice across Italy through their distinctive fusion of gothic metal melodies and the dual vocal approach of Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro. Ferro’s anguished screams paired with Scabbia’s otherworldly vocal reach helped cultivate a loyal audience that expanded beyond Italy into wider European territories, culminating in their U.S. breakthrough with the October 2002 release Comalies. Subsequent releases kept the band prominent on Top 40 listings in both Italy and the United States, including 2006’s Karmacode, the 2012 Billboard high point Dark Adrenaline, and 2016’s Delirium, which achieved their strongest Italian chart placement to date. Their ninth studio album, Black Anima, surfaced in 2019, with the reworked Comalies XX arriving in 2022.
Originally assembled in the late 1990s under the name Ethereal, the group promptly adopted Lacuna Coil after learning another act in Greece already used the earlier title. Following personnel adjustments, the lineup stabilized around Ferro, Scabbia, bassist and producer Marco Coti Zelati, guitarist Cristiano Migliore, and drummer Christiano Mozzati. Their self-titled EP introduced the band in 1998, and the debut full-length In a Reverie appeared the next year. The Halflife EP arrived in 2000, succeeded by Unleashed Memories in spring 2001, at which point the ensemble had gained solid footing within the metal scene and stood poised for wider recognition.
Comalies, the third album, delivered both critical and commercial impact, entering charts in the United States and Europe after its October 2002 launch. Momentum increased through extensive touring alongside Type O Negative, P.O.D., Opeth, and Danzig, among others, while the lead single “Heaven’s a Lie” secured U.S. commercial radio traction, matched by the follow-up “Swamped.” An invitation to 2004’s Ozzfest preceded a year of European festival appearances.
Karmacode, released in April 2006 and markedly heavier, marked their genuine commercial ascent, performing strongly worldwide and reaching number 28 on the Billboard 200. Continued global touring followed, leading to 2008 studio work with Linkin Park producer Don Gilmore and the 2009 release of the fifth album, Shallow Life. That deliberately mainstream effort, infused with pop-metal elements, became their strongest seller yet while polarizing portions of their audience. Dark Adrenaline, again produced by Gilmore, emerged in 2012 and signaled a partial return to a darker, heavier palette, peaking at number 15 in the United States—their highest position there at the time.
Broken Crown Halo pushed further in that direction. Working with Jay Baumgardner (Evanescence, Helmet, Drowning Pool) inside an historic Milan facility stocked with vintage analog gear, the band achieved a dense, weighty tone reminiscent of Karmacode. Shortly before its release, Migliore and Mozzati departed for personal reasons; the remaining members continued by enlisting former Agony Scene drummer Ryan Folden for the ensuing tour. Folden later joined permanently and contributed to the sessions for 2016’s expansive Delirium. Just prior to recording, longtime guitarist Marco Biazzi departed amicably, prompting founding bassist Marco Coti Zelati to handle all guitar parts, a role later assumed by Diego Cavallotti. Zelati also produced, marking the first album created entirely in-house. Echoing earlier material, Delirium balanced heaviness and melody through downtuned guitars, prominent bass, forceful drumming, and peak vocal performances from both Ferro and Scabbia. Strong European chart results accompanied its Italian debut just outside the Top Ten.
February 2018 brought a 20th-anniversary limited box set titled The Presence of the Past (XX Years of Lacuna Coil), encompassing every studio album plus selected live recordings, rare tracks, remixes, and B-sides across thirteen discs, accompanied by a lavish booklet containing lyrics, archival photographs, and detailed liner notes. Later that year Folden exited, and Richard Meiz of Genus Ordinis Dei joined as the new drummer in time for the ninth studio album. The darkly elegant Black Anima appeared in October 2019, led by the singles “Layers of Time” and “Reckless.” In 2022 the band revisited Comalies for its twentieth anniversary, issuing Comalies XX as a collection of “deconstructed and transported” reinterpretations that also contained the original recording.
